Health Services

UCP of Washington and Northern Virginia operates Experiences Unlimited (EU), a medically supervised adult day treatment program. This program is recognized by the District of Columbia, State Health Planning and Development Agency, Department of Human Services (DHS) and the District of Columbia Department of Health (DOH) Medical Assistance Administration (MAA) as a chronic care facility, which is designed to maintain individuals with chronic conditions or developmental disabilities at an optimum level of functioning. Individuals served by Experiences Unlimited (EU) reside in alternative community living arrangements, natural and foster homes.

One or more of the following services are offered to consumers who attend EU to promote and maintain functioning. The primary purpose of these services is to control the effect of disease, injury, or condition; prevent deterioration due to chronic condition, and enhance an individual's ability to function as independently as possible.

♦ Nutrition Counseling and Diet Management
♦ Physical Therapy Services
Speech and Hearing Therapy Services
♦ Occupational Therapy Services
♦ Health Status Assessment
♦ Health Care Counseling
♦ Psychological Support Services
♦ Behavioral Intervention
♦ Adaptive Therapy Services

The experience in the community is to provide a meaningful program for adults who are not presently receiving supportive employment or other vocational services on a full time basis. The program serves up to 250 consumers with moderate to profound mental retardation. Most of these consumers also have severe physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy and many are also considered to be medically fragile and require 24-hour nursing services. Approximately 80% are non-ambulatory and use wheelchairs as their primary means of mobility. Over 80% require assistance to meet their personal care needs.

The goal is to provide habilitation in the areas of communication, community survival, personal and home management, health care and adaptive therapy in order to improve each consumer's ability to function more independently in his/her current living environment and in the greater community.
